爲大醫王하야 善療衆病하되
應病與藥하야 令得服行하며
큰 의사가 되어 온갖 병을 잘 치료하는데
병에 맞추어 약을 주어 잘 복용하도록 한다.
강설 ; 부처님과 관음보살을 훌륭한 의사라고 표현하기도 한다.
세상의 사표인 보살은 당연히 세상 사람들의 몸의 병과 마음의 병을
모두 치료하는 의사가 되어야 한다.
불교가 세상에 존재하는 이유가 바로 중생들의 갖가지 병을 치료하기 위함이다.
그래서 불교가 하는 일을 한마디로 응병여약(應病與藥)하는 종교라고 한다.
